You’ve gotten clear on what you want to accomplish in your business. You’ve set specific, measurable goals for yourself. You’ve mapped out a plan and scheduled time on your calendar to take consistent action. What else can you do to ensure that you achieve your goal of consistently attracting ideal clients to your business?
Two things:
- Determine how to eliminate your goal saboteurs
- Create a support/accountability system to keep you on track
First, let’s address the goal saboteurs. We ALL have them. Overcoming them is simply a matter of acknowledging yours and setting up systems to eliminate them.
The most common saboteur I see is “bright shiny object” syndrome. If you have ever taken small children to a candy store, you may have laughed to yourself as you watched them run around the store trying to taste everything they could put their hands on. There is no focus or logic to their decisions. They just want to try everything.
You don’t want to run your business this way, where you’re chasing every new opportunity presented to you, without any rhyme or reason. If you have a tendency to always want to try the next “new” thing, recognize that you have to have rein yourself in. From today forward, start making decisions in your business based on which path will get you closest to your specific goals. Setup a support system so that you don’t get sidetracked and lose sight of what you’re trying to accomplish.
Another common saboteur is the “super hero” syndrome, where you try to be all things to all people and are constantly trying to save the day. You find yourself consistently agreeing to commitments that are completely unrealistic. You’re constantly piling more on your plate than you can handle, deadlines come and go without being met, and this creates endless frustration for you and those you work with.
If you’re always trying to “save the day” learn to think before you speak and commit. If this is your challenge, acknowledge it and don’t make excuses around it. Rather put structures and systems in place so that you don’t get derailed by this aspect of your personality.
Another saboteur that can undermine your efforts is the “no one does it as good as me” syndrome. You think every project and task is something you must personally handle and you don’t trust anyone to do it as well as you. You won’t make the time to teach a team member how to support you. Or perhaps you have some sense of “entrepreneurial martyrdom”, where you think success can only come from you working your fingers to the bone without any help.
Know this. NO one has built a successful business on their own. It simply can’t be done. You need help! Accepting help doesn’t mean you are weak or incapable. It’s really just a matter of you focusing on your brilliance and delegating the rest to others who are well-skilled in the areas where you are not.
Don’t let these common challenges that derail other service professionals disrupt what you’re doing in your business. You don’t have to give in to your saboteurs. Instead, acknowledge them and build a support system so that you can move past them and continually make progress.
First, hire skilled professionals to help you with various aspects of your business. Whether it’s an intern, a Virtual Assistant, a Project Manager or a Bookkeeper, get the right professionals in place to manage the details and opportunities that are falling through the cracks. Research technical solutions to automate day-to-day functions so that you can focus your time and attention on working with clients and marketing your business.
Also, for the best results in achieving your goals, I highly recommend working with a coach. It’s all too easy to “flake out” on yourself. Having a mentor who can see what’s possible (past what you can see for yourself), look at your business objectively, brainstorm with you and hold you accountable is priceless. Working with a coach will give you the additional support you need to stay focused and on track.
Regardless of the type of business you have, achieving your goal of attracting more clients and boosting your income is easily within your grasp. By implementing the steps we’ve covered during this four-part article series, you’ll be well on your way to creating a successful, profitable business that supports your lifestyle and allows you to serve others in a big way!
Your Action Plan For The Week:
- Be honest with yourself and determine which goal saboteurs frequently interfere with you achieving your business goals.
- Make the decision to do things different from today forward. This is critically important. Every action starts with a decision!
- Research vendors and technical solutions to support you in managing the operational and marketing tasks in your business.
